Robert Lewis Stevenson’s gothic novella represents another engagement with the problematic legacy of Descartes’ view of human nature.

Before looking at the novella more closely, I discuss the work alongside previous explorations of the problem of a materialist conception of human nature, which science tries to solve - only to create disastrous consequences.
