ADG Episode 154 - Populous II

Sometimes developers try way too hard to make a sequel that's completely different from the game they originally made. Thankfully, today's Ancient DOS Game, Populous II, is not one of those. (Although the third Populous game IS.) The game was developed by Bullfrog Productions and the DOS version was published by Electronic Arts in 1993. This episode covers how the game is played, how to obtain the game, and how to get it working on modern computers using DOSBox.

* One thing I forgot to mention is that the game incidentally has Adlib music support, but the only time you hear music is during the introduction sequence, so the fact that it's there is almost pointless. :P

* If memory serves, the level count goes all the way up to 1000, and yes, it does take as long to get there as you might imagine. You can clear about 100 levels every six to eight hours depending on how well you score versus how much time you spend in each level. Multiply that out and you end up having 60 to 80 hours of gameplay ahead of you... Can you blame me for not being able to demonstrate every single effect in the game? o_o;

* The original Amiga game forced the use of passwords to track your character. This DOS version hacked in the ability to load and save your character, but you have to be careful with this feature because only a single character can be saved in this manner at a time and it's extremely easy to accidentally save the default character when you first start the game up, or accidentally load your previous save after clearing a level! x_x;

* The same customization and map painting features from the first game are still present in this one. ;)
