Japan’s 1981 promo video for Visions of China, cleaned up and synched to a contemporary audio remaster.

Visions of China was the first single proper from Japan’s fifth and final album, Tin Drum. It was released on the 30th of October 1981, a couple of weeks prior to the much anticipated new album. The single did reasonably well, reaching no. 32 on the UK charts.

The accompanying video is a beauty! It is arguably Japans most accomplished promo video, with very high production quality and packed with creativity and tongue in cheek humour.

By the time of Tin Drum, Japan had totally transformed from the band that had produced Quiet Life only a couple of years prior. And more of the "serious" music press was onboard, and the band's unfortunate reputation as pretty boy synth pop was well behind them. NME's Paul Morley wrote of the album: "Gorgeously erotic, perfectly evanescent. It accepts transitoriness, yet delights in sensation." In a contemporary review, Joseph Burnett of The Quietus described Tin Drum in 2013 as "unique in pop history, a fearlessly ambitious, unusual and conceptual work of art that defies genre categorisation."
