Описание к видео Rockie Charles - "Festis Believe In Justice"

Featured on the Putumayo collection "Louisiana Gumbo."
Originally released on January 25th, 2000.

From the liner notes:

While singer/guitarist Rockie Charles was a longtime veteran of the music industry, it took a 1994 ad in a New Orleans entertainment directory to get his first solo record produced. Charles was born in 1942 in Boothville, Louisiana, a fishing town near the mouth of the Mississippi River. He played with a number of New Orleans R&B bands in the 1960s, but auditions for a variety of record companies went nowhere, save a few obscure singles on the Black Patch label. After relocating to Nashville at the end of the 60s to forge a career as a backing musician for artists like O.V. Wright, Percy Sledge, Little Johnny Taylor and Otis Redding, he returned to New Orleans to start his own label, Soulgate. By the late 1970s, however, the musician's life was not keeping food on the table and Charles ended up as a tugboat captain and oyster fisherman.

By placing an ad looking for pickup gigs in his spare time, Charles rescued his talent from being lost to history, a fate common to New Orleans musicians. Producer Carlos Ditta of Orleans Records was intrigued by the ad and set up a meeting with Charles. Fascinated by his talent and personal history, Ditta brought him to the studio to record an album that revived his musical career. Charles' debut CD, Born for You, is a disarmingly original and unique work that highlights Charles' straight to the bone guitar playing, emotive vocals and quirky, original lyrics. Charles passed away after a long illness in 2010.
