Spain’s weather agency has issued a red alert, the highest warning level, for Alicante, Valencia, and Murcia from 10 a.m. Friday until midnight.

Up to 180 litres of rain per square metre are forecast in just twelve hours. Fifty-one towns across Alicante are now classified as extreme risk, and civil protection alerts have been sent directly to mobile phones across the coast.

The warning covers the Vega Baja region and parts of Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón, where modelling shows the heaviest rainfall could hit. Schools in the Murcia region will close as a precaution.

Officials warn that flash floods and urban inundation are likely, with saturated ground from previous storms increasing the danger. Radar already shows dense storm cells building offshore over a warm Mediterranean.

Residents are urged to avoid travel, move to higher ground, and monitor emergency updates.

Eastern Spain is facing one of the most serious rainfall events of the year, and forecasters say conditions could deteriorate rapidly once the storm moves ashore.
