Restoration and Rejuvenation of the floodplains of River Yamuna by DDA is an initiative to
enhance the ecological character of the floodplains and to make them accessible to public by
providing nature friendly spaces near the river.
One of the projects recently initiated under the guidance of Hon’ble LG of Delhi, ’Baansera’
located at Sarai Kale Khan on the western bank of the Yamuna River has been proposed to be
developed as the Capital’s first Bamboo themed public space. Spreading over an area of 12 -
15 hectares Baansera falls within the 163 ha of Kalindi Aviral project.
Hon’ble LG first visited the site in June 2022 and shared his vision for a bamboo themed public
space for the people of Delhi. The vision was not only to provide a unique urban space along
the river but also to promote use of bamboo as a sustainable material.
The name has been derived from the Hindi word ‘Basera’ meaning ‘the abode’, thus named as
Baansera –The bamboo abode.
The aim of the project is to make use of bamboo in its living and recreational form (I) use of
different species of bamboo as plantation along with the other riverine plantations and (ii) as
design elements with bamboo as a building material.
The project was inaugurated by the Hon’ble LG of Delhi on August 9, 2022.
‘Baansera’ will be one of its kind offering a unique experience in terms of spaces designed
amidst plantation of almost 13000 bamboos of about 15 varieties of Bambusa and
Dendrocalamus family planted in the form of groves and in setums. Apart from plantations, the
park will have amenities designed in bamboo, an eco-friendly material.
