In this episode, Dr. Rahil Chaudhary, leading eye doctor and cataract & refractive surgeon at Eye7 Eye Hospitals explains a problem almost everyone has faced — red eyes — and why treating it casually can be risky.
He says, “Redness in the eyes can happen for more than 50 reasons! It could be bacterial, viral, fungal, or allergic, or sometimes even due to pollution or tiredness.” Every cause demands a different line of treatment — for example, one patient may need an antibacterial eye drop, while another might need anti-fungal or anti-allergic medication.
Dr. Rahil warns against the common habit many Indians have — calling a friend or directly visiting a pharmacy instead of an eye specialist. Most chemists give a steroid-based antibiotic combination, which indeed provides instant relief but can silently cause severe long-term damage if misused.
“Steroids are powerful but dangerous,” Dr. Rahil emphasizes. “Overusing them can lead to cataract (safed motiyabind) or even glaucoma (kala motiyabind). By the time patients reach us, the damage is often irreversible.”
His advice is clear — never self-medicate for eye redness. Instead, get a proper diagnosis from an ophthalmologist to find the real cause.
