Title: সৈকতের পাখি সংরক্ষণ | Conservation of Shorebirds
Conservation of Shorebirds
Bangladesh, the world’s largest delta along the Bay of Bengal, has an extensive coastline.
These long beaches across the coast are not only places of recreation for people, but also vital habitats for many species of shorebirds.
With the rhythm of the tides, these beaches become unique feeding grounds, where small fish, snails, crabs, insects, and algae grazers serve as food for the birds.
Countless islands and chars have formed in this coastal region due to the accumulation of silt from upstream rivers.
These long beaches and coastal chars become sonorous with the presence of various bird species.
There are both resident and migratory species among the shorebirds.
Besides resident birds, thousands of migratory birds arrive from colder countries and regions on this coast each year.
Migratory shorebirds travel regularly from one country or region to another each year, following specific geographical routes at specific times.
Several coastal islands and chars of Bangladesh are important habitats for the migratory shorebirds.
Sonadia Island, Nijhum Dwip, Ganguirar Char, Domar Char, Char Birbira, and Char Shahjalal are notable among them.
Besides, shorebirds flock on the freshwater waterbodies, including Hakaluki Haor, Hail Haor, Tanguar Haor, and other haors for food and shelter.
Among shorebirds in our country, various species of herons, whistling ducks, spoonbills, ibises, plovers, godwits, curlews, gulls, and terns are notable.
These birds fill the coastal islands with chirping sounds and vitality.
The main habitats of shorebirds are tidal mudflats or sandflats, estuaries, grasslands of chars, and vegetated sand dunes.
They used these areas for feeding, resting, and breeding.
Their diet mainly depends on small organisms such as insects beneath the sand, small crabs, snails, and earthworms living in the alluvial soil.
Some species also feed on fish and aquatic plants.
These birds not only enhance the beauty of nature but also play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance.
They help sustain the biodiversity of the ecosystem by feeding on microorganisms and insects living under the silt and sand along the shore.
Their presence is considered an indicator of a healthy coastal ecosystem.
Thus, the presence of shorebirds is crucial for the well-being of our coastal environment.
