How many goaltending plays will you get right? This is the 5 Play Challenge.

Описание к видео How many goaltending plays will you get right? This is the 5 Play Challenge.

Another 5 Play Challenge is here presented by Officials Institute (OI). This video highlights five plays involving goaltending. First is a real time view, complete with the ruling by the original officials. Next comes a zoomed in and slowed down look at the play. We end with an analysis and some commentary as to what the ruling should have been. Remember, these plays are goaltending plays so please ignore any other rule you may notice being violated. These videos are dedicated to educating officials on the NFHS rules of basketball.

The OI 5 play challenge is not set up to explain the rule in detail but will give reference to certain rules as the final analysis is given. This is done to provide context to the decision making process of how we should get to the proper ruling in the play. Every goaltending video we show in this segment is clipped from actual footage of high school basketball games, involving high school athletes. The goal is to provide as much possible information to assist the way we see these types of plays in the future. The more plays we see, with detailed explanation, the better we will get at identifying the correct ruling more consistently.

0:00 - Intro
0:28 - Play #1 - No whistle on this possible goaltending violation. What do you have?
1:34 - Play #2 - Goaltending is the initial ruling. Was it correct?
2:47 - Play #3 - Player hits the ball and slaps the backboard in the process. No whistle.
3:48 - Play #4 - Two points awarded on this play.
4:55 - Play #5 - Legal play is the ruling. Watch it again and you decide.
7:00 - Thanks for taking the 5 Play Challenge.

Watching video clips is a good way to hone your basketball officiating skills and retain your learning for future use. We believe the most effective way to assist in building a correct understanding of rules and how to apply them is by watching videos with annotation, diagrams and shading to highlight key teaching points. Taking away and remembering specifics on a rule is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.

The Officials Institute, and the 5 Play Challenge segment, creates videos in a fun and interesting way to test your ability to properly recognize specific plays, but don't leave you guessing about whether there was a foul, violation or not. Even though we cannot officiate in slow motion or freeze frames, by watching and reviewing video video in this fashion, we are able to "retrain our brain" so we can start seeing plays more accurately when we do see them in real time and increase our ability to get the call right.
