Stage 9
Mystic Jungle - vs. Infinite
(Remember to click on "Show more.")

Now it's time for Sonic to settle the score--back when Sonic fought Infinite six months ago, he had no idea what Infinite could do, and as Infinite summoned Shadow, Metal Sonic, Zavok, and Chaos to fight Sonic together, Sonic got his butt handed to him. Not anymore--Sonic is now aware of Infinite's ominous red cubes, and Infinite is by himself. Sonic may be a reckless thrill seeker, but he is also not someone to make the same mistake twice. As a result, Sonic puts up a much better fight against Infinite than the masked man would suspect.

As if to prepare for a stylish looking set for the duel, Infinite uses the Phantom Ruby's power to mess with the gravity in the area, creating a lot of floating platforms. Most of this fight, however, is set on the body of the giant snake Sonic fought with in the previous stage, which now possesses its own gravitational field, not unlike Super Mario Galaxy (or, if you prefer Sonic Lost World), albeit specific to Sonic, Infinite, Rings, and Wisp capsules.

This is the sort of boss battle where you run after the boss at all times. Infinite always keeps ahead of Sonic at full non-boosting speed. The exception is when he creates red cubes to attack Sonic with, during which he will slow down to slightly below Sonic's non-boosting speed. Hence, as long as you keep on roughly the same side of the snake as Infinite, you'll get within Homing Attack range each time he will try to attack Sonic.

Infinite always tries to attack Sonic with formations of red cubes. He will begin with horizontal ring-shaped bands and alternate with a diagonal spiraling band. In both of these, as long as you focus on keeping Infinite in front of Sonic, Infinite will wind up in Sonic's Homing Attack range when Sonic has to jump. After 3 hits, Infinite will take to the sky and create a swarm of duplicates of himself. Sonic then pursues him with a bunch of springs, and the swarm becomes a Homing Attack chain for Sonic to reach Infinite with, whio will go back down to the snake, and the battle resumes there.

Infinite will change to alternate between two different formations of red cubes. He starts off with rectangular structures, with the narrower width equal to the diameter of the snake, so you must either jump over the rectangles or run under it, depending on the rectangle's angle relative to Sonic. His other formation is a direct attack, creating two short walls on either side of Sonic that follow him, which will then slam into each other that Sonic must jump over. This time, Infinite can recover his speed faster, so while the boost is not necessary, it is very helpful in letting Sonic catch back up to Infinite before he has time to do much attacking. After another 3 hits, Infinite will once again fly up high and create another swarm of duplicates, which, again, Sonic can use as a Homing Attack chain to deal the final blow.

By the way, those aren't simply attacks Infinite is doing with the red cubes. The Phantom Ruby has the ability to warp reality and alter perception, and if Sonic comes in contact with any of Infinite's red cubes, he will be subject to a genjutsu of Infinite's choosing, which is Sonic continuing to run along the snake, only now it has obstacles everywhere and Infinite is nowhere in sight. Hence, if you're playing for time, it is crucial you don't let Infinite lay a finger on Sonic, or his cubes, as it will eat up a lot of time even if you successfully escape Infinite's alternate reality unscathed.

By finishing this boss battle within 85 seconds (1 minute 25 seconds), you can see I unlocked that blue hat I now have on my Avatar's head.

In one of those cases of cutscene incompetence, this battle ends with a loss for Sonic the moment the game allows the story to continue: Infinite just does his area-of-effect move with the Phantom Ruby to trap Sonic, then throws energy blasts at him to knock him off the snake and onto the ground. Infinite then declares Sonic not good enough to be worth fighting and leaves him collapsed on the floor. Meanwhile, Tails continues to accompany Classic Sonic and tells him that Dr. Eggman is now somewhere in Green Hill, which will lead us to Stage 10.

Apparently, Jun Senoue, the composer most closely associated with the Sonic franchise, returned for this game, but only to play the electric guitar parts for songs pertaining to Infinite. I have no idea what the deal is with that. (The music in this game is mostly composed by Tomoya Ohtani, the man who stood in for Senoue's place when Senoue went freelance; with the other songs by fellow Sonic mainstays Naofumi Hataya, best known for the Sonic CD Japanese soundtrack; and Kenichi Tokoi, who joined for Sonic Adventure and was in charge of the Space Channel 5 music.)
