In dir is Freude (In Thee is gladness) is one of the hardest chorale preludes of the Orgelbüchlein collection. The compositional procedure used in this piece is unique in the entire collection. The entire chorale melody is not presented continuously but in fragments. The number of voices varies, many changes of texture occur, and in some places the style is more homophonic than contrapuntal.

A simple spirit of jubilation is pervades the text and the music. This is carried out through the ostinato figures in the pedal and fragmentation of the chorale in chordal fashion in the manuals.Translated from the original German version, the text says:

In You is gladness amid all suffering, sweet Jesus Christ!
Through You, true Savior, we have heavenly gifts.
You help us from shame and save us from bondage;
whoever trusts in You has built well
and will stay forever. Alleluia!
Our souls belong to Your goodness.
We cleave to You in death and in life.
Nothing can separate us. Alleluia!
