Northern Manawatu Model Railway Club annual Downhill Trial. This is the third and last category in the club’s annual competitions. In this comp, any piece of rolling stock of the member’s choosing is let go at the top of the 2.2% Santa Margarita incline - no pushing/nudging or otherwise trying to boost the car is allowed.

The route starts at the summit, past the Santa Margarita tunnel, rolls through the San Luis Obispo yards, along the main to the Salinas yards before being blocked at the outbound tunnel. In the case of a tie (reaching the tunnel) a second run starts at the signal, south (downhill) of the Santa Margarita hill tunnel.

Clive pulled an Athearn Blue Box tank car off the layout, which failed to get off the mark. There were a few others that failed to roll on the day.
