Ageism Is Bad
But You Will Encounter Young People Think 50 Is Old

Turns out we do not think about ageism when we are 30 or 40. Heck, we might have even had ageist ideas about those who were a few more years our senior. But if you survive, you get older.... and boom.... in one week the topic of "AGEISM" comes up in three conversations.

Have you experienced ageism in the workplace? It is wrong, but not much you can do if they do not tell you they are not hiring you because of your age. Some make hiring decisions and say "Cultural Fit"... but what they mean is you are as old as their mom or dad and that makes them feel weird.

But discrimination is always bad. And one day you look up, you are being passed by for someone based on age and assumptions.

I feel bad for the young woman who told me her audience simply cannot relate to anyone over 50.....WHAT? First of all, that is not only wrong, it is stupid and small minded. (And not what she should have said).

The good news is that all studies show that diversity makes every team, conference, friend group, etc... better. And diversity is not just skin color or gender. Differences in thoughts and experiences make all teams stronger.

If you are over 50 you might encounter ageism. I do not have an answer, but I will tell you that most people are open to differences and champion them. We might have to work a little harder to prove ourselves, but there are countless examples of people over 50 who have the best years of their careers. Even people over 60, over 70, over 80, etc....

The only way to beat ageism is to not let is hold you back. When some idiot thinks older people just don't get it...out work them. Use experience as your "Secret Weapon".
