North Canton police say one person was injured and a suspect is in custody after an active shooter situation Thursday morning at Versailles Gardens Apartments on Applegrove Street.

According to the North Canton Police Department, the incident began around 8:50 a.m. when a woman called 911 to report she was injured. Police said officers arrived a few minutes later and located the victim in the hallway with multiple gunshot wounds.

During the rescue, police said officers were under heavy gunfire. The victim was extracted through a bedroom window while eight to nine rounds were being fired.

“Medics entered the warm zone. A warm zone is basically when shots aren't being fired," said Major Matthew Buzzard of the North Canton Police Department during a press conference. "It quickly turned to a hot zone as bullets started coming through the wall at the officers and the medics. They took cover. Officers pushed to the back of the apartment where one of the sergeants, a former SWAT officer, ripped the window out with his bare hands, jumped out the window, and they pulled her out and evacuated out the back window of the apartment."
