Description – Constructed wetlands have been used throughout the world to improve the water quality of industrial, agricultural, storm runoff and domestic wastewater (Kadlec & Knight, 1996). This paper will review the range of constructed wetland technology currently available and discuss the most appropriate systems to use for treatment of different wastewater types in different contexts (Vymazal, 2007).

The presentation will also consider the additional benefits in terms of biodiversity, human health and well-being, livelihoods, storm protection and carbon reduction that can be achieved with careful design and appreciation of the physical, ecological and social context of a system.
The presentation will conclude by looking at the future of wastewater treatment within the catchment context and examine how waste streams and the inclusion of additional benefits can transform how we view and use wastewater in a sustainable future.
