Greenwich and Cutty Sark Journeys into Land, Heritage ,And Stories on The Road Over the past few years I’ve fallen in love with moving through the UK. In January 2024 I bought a campervan and, although I was nervous at first, that small act opened a new kind of freedom — the freedom to roam, to stop when something calls, and to meet people who hold stories about the places they live. The van gave me flexibility and a community: other travellers who talk passionately about van life, locals who share hidden histories, and strangers who reveal quiet, surprising facets of their towns and villages.
I learned to drive, to manage the technical side of living on the road, and with each journey I grew more confident.
This series, Changing Spaces, is the next layer of that work. The title comes from my academic curiosity — from research I did in my master’s on race, culture and difference — and from the simple observation that spaces change us, and we change spaces. What began as small experiments in 2023 has become a deliberate practice: following a nudge and seeing where it goes, exploring place and people, and letting the landscape shape the questions I ask.
One trip that shifted everything was a journey through parts of Wales in August. I found myself drawn to manor houses, to old hotels and to the politics and religion that have shaped a place for centuries. I returned refreshed, but with a deeper awareness of how land, power and story sit in the present. I was also planning Scotland — a personal pilgrimage of sorts, because my family are Scottish and I haven’t been back in many years. This felt different: more intimate, more about lineage and belonging.
So Changing Spaces is a record of those steps. It’s scenery and food and campsites; it’s the people I meet and their stories; and it’s the inner work — psychology, spiritual practice and clarity — that shows up when you move through place. Sometimes I travel alone; sometimes I travel with others, and that difference matters. Shared journeys reveal friction and generosity in ways solo trips do not.
I’ll be recording, writing and sharing — videos for Mel’s Campervan Adventures, blog posts, and podcast episodes — reflecting on travel, history, relationships and the small practices that protect our peace.
