Australia's fertility rate hit a record low in 2020 and the Bureau of Statistics says women are choosing to have children later in life, according to Sky News business reporter Edward Boyd.

This means there is less economic activity as fewer children means fewer childcare jobs and less people who will pay tax when they grow up.

The median age of Australian mothers in 2020 is 31.6 years old, a number which has been slowly rising over the last 30 years.

The ABS has shown fertility rates have dropped from 1.9 children per woman in 1990 to 1.58 today.
