What is Acanthosis Nigricans or Hyperpigmentation?

Описание к видео What is Acanthosis Nigricans or Hyperpigmentation?

A fairly common skin pigmentation disorder, the most notable sign of this is dark patches of skin with a thick, velvety texture.

What is Acanthosis nigricans?
It is a skin condition characterised by areas of dark, velvety discolouration in body folds and creases. The affected skin can become thickened. Most often, acanthosis nigricans affects your armpits, groin and neck. Typically occurs in people who are obese or have diabetes. These skin patches occur when epidermal skin cells begin to reproduce rapidly.

What causes this?
Too much Insulin: This abnormal skin cell growth is most commonly triggered by high levels of insulin in the blood.
Hormonal disorders: often occurs in people who have disorders such as ovarian cysts, under active thyroids or problems with the adrenal glands.
Medications: Certain drugs and supplements. High-dose niacin, birth control pills, prednisone and other corticosteroids may cause acanthosis nigricans.

If you begin to recognise this visit your doctor or dermatologist and they may want to check for diabetes or insulin resistance as the cause. These tests may include blood glucose tests or fasting insulin tests.

It’s important to tell your doctor about any dietary supplements, vitamins, or bodybuilding supplements you may be taking in addition to your prescription medications.

If the lesions become uncomfortable or start to smell bad, your doctor may suggest:
Prescription creams to lighten or soften the affected areas
Antibacterial soaps, used gently, as scrubbing could worsen the condition
Topical antibiotic
Oral acne medications
Laser therapy to reduce the skin's thickness
