LEADIN:
A new art exhibition in Germany explores images of magic and the occult found within surrealist painting.
Many early surrealists were inspired by the supernatural, alchemy and pre-modern science.
STORYLINE
It is a world filled with symbolism and strangeness.
Of empty worlds that look a bit like or own, but at the same time very different.
Surrealist artists explore dreams, fantasies and the inner world.
But there is another side to surrealism, one that was also inspired by the occult, the supernatural and pre-modern thought.
"We know about the dreams and the subconscious; we know about the focus on Freud and Jung.," says Ortrud Westheider, Director, Museum Barberini
"But what is little known is that surrealism is very concerned with old traditional occult science and pre-modern science like alchemy. And that is the focus here."
An exhibition at the Museum Barberini in Potsdam, south of Berlin, is exploring the connection between surrealist art and the occult.
The paintings show landscapes and figures, but there is always an undertone of something darker. Something from another world.
"There are many pictures that are full of occult symbolism," says Daniel Zamani, Curator, Museum Barberini
In "The Guest Room" by the American artists Dorothea Tanning, two children are in a small room.
Another child is sleeping in a bed, holding a wooden doll.
