For the Figure Skating Community in the United States, February 15th, 1961, is remembered as a deeply tragic day. 18 athletes plus coaches, referee’s, judges, and family members making up the United States Figure Skating Team were on their way to compete in the 1961, world Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Connecting through Brussels, they flew on Sabena Flight 548 out of New York, operated with a then brand-new Boeing 707. In fact the crash of Sabena Flight 548 was the first fatal accident to involve a 707 on a commercial passenger flight. So what went wrong?
