May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is America’s most common cancer. It is estimated that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime and anyone can get skin cancer regardless of skin color. It's shocking that more than 2 people die of skin cancer every hour in the United States.

Research has shown that patients, not doctors, are more likely to detect skin cancers early, particularly melanoma which is the deadliest form of skin cancer. You can save your life and the life of others by doing skin checks regularly to detect skin cancer. Early skin cancer detection saves lives because skin cancer is highly curable when caught early.

I encourage you to be vigilant and check your skin every month for signs of moles or spots changing size, shape or color. If you notice any changes in skin or new spots that are different from others, moles or spots that are changing, itching or bleeding, don't wait and make an appointment to see a board-certified dermatologist immediately. I also highly recommend that you see your dermatologist for a full body skin check every year.
