James Monroe, born in 1758 in Virginia, played a pivotal role in shaping early America. During the Revolutionary War, Monroe took part in the famous crossing of the Delaware River and fought in the Battle of Trenton, where he was wounded in action. After the war, Monroe studied law and received guidance from Thomas Jefferson, who became his political mentor. He went on to serve as a U.S. senator, governor of Virginia, and diplomat in France, where he helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase. As the 5th president of the United States, Monroe is best known for the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, which warned European powers against further colonization in the Americas. This policy became a cornerstone of U.S. foreign relations. Monroe also secured Florida from Spain, expanding the nation's territory. He died on July 4, 1831, becoming the third president to pass away on Independence Day.
