Peter highlights two important elements for every husband to be aware of and learn how to implement in their marriages.

#1 Honor your wife as an equal partner in God's gift of salvation and new life.

#2 Strive to live with your wife in an understanding way.

He makes it clear to husbands that learning and applying these things in their marriages is vital and warns them that not treating their wives as they should will hinder their prayers. In other words, do you want to know how to make sure God doesn't listen to your prayers? It's easy - don't honor your wife and make little effort to understand her and treat her right. BINGO - Your prayers will be ignored!

In the culture that Peter was writing to they did not see women as equals. They were thought to be weaker, more fragile, unable to make decisions in court, and so on. This weakness was seen as less important. Less valuable.

But Peter highlights that God sees women very differently than the world they're living in. God sees women as equally worthy of salvation. Equally worthy of Jesus's blood shed for the forgiveness of their sins. Equally worthy of his Holy Spirit residing in, speaking to, guiding, teaching, encouraging, etc.

This equality in the MOST important thing was a HUGE shift from the way women or wives were thought of in the ancient world.

So for husbands to Honor their wives as equals in God's eyes makes sense.
