Tacondo Elementary School in Margot, Angeles City, Pampanga was awarded a prestigious 5-star rating for its safe school zone initiatives. The accolade presented by Star Rating for Schools, recognizes exemplary efforts in ensuring road safety for students traveling to and from school.

The awarding ceremony held on Tuesday (November 19, 2024) drew representatives from local government, international organizations, media and the community. The event celebrated Tacondo Elementary School as the first in Pampanga and the entire Philippines to earn the highest rating for road safety measures.

The recognition is the result of a collaborative effort involving the Angeles City Traffic Development Office (ACTDO), National Center for Transportation Studies (NCTS), International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP), UNICEF Philippines and the legal advocacy group ImagineLaw. These organizations have worked closely with the school to implement safety measures designed to reduce the risk of road crashes for children.

The measures include clearly marked pedestrian crossings, speed reduction signage, traffic calming features such as speed bumps, and increased visibility for school zones. These efforts aim to create a safe environment for the hundreds of students who travel daily to Tacondo Elementary School.

Angeles City Vice Mayor Vicky Vega Cabigting, Margot Barangay Captain Hon. Dominador A. Lising Jr., and DepEd Angeles City Schools Division Superintendent Engr. Edgard C. Domingo, PhD CESO V were among the dignitaries present for this event.

Principal of Tacondo Elementary School, Ma'am Cherry Y. Hipolito expressed her heartfelt gratitude during the ceremony stating this is a monumental milestone for their school, community and most importantly the safety of children. This recognition reflects their collective commitment to ensuring that no child is endangered on their journey to school.

The Star Rating for Schools evaluates the safety of school zones worldwide based on various factors including road infrastructure, traffic management and community engagement. A 5-star rating signifies that the school has achieved the highest standard in safeguarding children against road risks.

Margot Barangay Captain Hon. Dominador A. Lising Jr. said this achievement sets a benchmark for other schools in the Philippines. It shows that with collaboration, we can protect our children and create a safer community for all.

The award not only brings recognition to Tacondo Elementary School but also serves as a call to action for other schools in the Philippines to prioritize road safety. With this success, stakeholders hope to inspire similar initiatives across the country ensuring that every child has a safe route to education.
