This is the thirteenth event of a webinar series arranged by the permanent working group on Human Behaviour in Fires by the International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS).

There are a variety of modelling approaches designed to simulate the movement of pedestrians, including networks, cellular automata, and continuous space models. This presentation will focus specifically on the application of network models for the evacuation of people from buildings in the event of a fire. It will begin with a brief history of network tools used for simulating pedestrian movement, along with a basic explanation of their functionality. The session will then spend much of its time examining the perceived strengths and challenges associated with network models. To illustrate the concepts, the presentation will showcase examples from previous research conducted using the Evacuationz network simulation tool.

Dr. Michael Spearpoint is currently the Research Leader at OFR Consultants based in the Manchester, UK office. He was previously an Associate Professor at the University of Canterbury (UC), New Zealand where he taught students on human behaviour and egress modelling. While at UC he wrote the Evacuationz network simulation tool which was then used by several students as part of their research projects. The tool still occasionally gets used for specific research studies.
