A stampede at a religious congregation in Hathras killed 121 people on Tuesday as devotees suffocated to their deaths and bodies piled atop each other in the worst such tragedy in recent years. Most of the victims were women. According to the FIR, around 2.5 lakh devotees attended the event while there was permission for only 80,000. The stampede took place as people headed home after a ‘satsang’ in the district’s Phulrai village, conducted by a preacher known as Bhole Baba.
