This is one of a series of 2014 studies using parallel Midi control of Audio and Visual Synthesis. These are fundamentally AV works and can be viewed on You Tube.

Audio Visual Synthesis means both the synthetic creation of Audio and Visual material, and also their synthesis in the sense of these two information streams alchemically coming together, blending.

Ableton Live and its arpeggiators and effects were used for the audio component. Visuals were from the brilliant modular video software VDMX + Polyphonic 1.29, a custom Quartz Plugin video synth for drawing coloured shapes triggered by Midi (design by Matt Black, coded by Lukasz Boroz).

A TouchOSC patch was built with a ton of sliders and used to send Midi CC data to Live and VDMX simultaneously, so that the audio and visual synths were triggered at once, and audio and visual effects also applied. This necessitated a process which could be thought of as a form of mapping: deciding what the relationship should be between each audio and visual parameter used. In Late Night Circle Study 1, I relate an example of these mappings.

So I believe that the relationships between Audio and Visual streams are plastic, ie not fixed. There is no absolute correct mapping for eg colour frequency to sound frequency. The mappings can be set as required. Some relationships work better than others.
