Another Cross-Country Road Trip that was a 2nd Follow-Up Rescue Mission from last Summer of July 2015. This time around Lucky met me after 13 months passed in August 2016 (approx. 7 yrs.+ in dog years). It was heartbreaking to see my little buddy barely able to stand up for a few moments,.. let alone walk. Lucky was incredibly agile and a "bouncy ball of energy" in his youth, and commonly used to show-off by walking "upright on his rear 2 legs" attempting to model how humans walk. He was incredible to watch like a human midget dressed in a costume of fur & braided dreadlock hair. Many times I thought Lucky did not perceive himself as a dog, but more as a human. His intelligence certainly reflected that no doubt as I used to observe how he walked up to a full mirror and closely study himself, which he even did on this past visit to Chesapeake, Va. in Aug. 2016.
While in the motel room looking at himself from different angles in the mirror of the sliding closet door, I was fascinated watching him doing this, ESPECIALLY AT HIS AGE since Lucky is 16(+) human years,.. putting him at approx. 115 yrs. old in dog's age!!! Thinking most humans would not survive till that age, and if so, would probably have severe Dementia, Alzheimer's, etc., etc. And accordingly, the average life span of his breed runs between 10 - 12 yrs. Lucky has exceeded that by a long shot like race horses such as Seabiscuit or Secretariat leaving their peers in a long stretch of dust on the race-track that these horses were so famously noted for upon being recorded in History. • Seabiscuit - Final Race

So after numerous consultations with the best Vets in Virginia, (after ruling out MRI’s followed by Surgery to seek out & extract neurological abnormalities since anesthesia alone can kill a dog at Lucky’s age which would be required for an MRI and Surgery,.. and with NO GUARANTEE that Lucky would ever walk again even following surgery if he should survive surgery), the strategy was to have a custom built wheel-chair for Lucky to learn to walk in. You’d think that would be simple enough, but it took jumping through many hoops with researching multiple sites given by Vets to seek out the wheelchair model best for Lucky,.. which also required a return visit to the Vet to have Lucky measured from 8 different angles when ordering on the net. So in short, I ordered a custom built (2-wheeler) wheel-chair for Lucky after being told that HE WAS ABLE TO WALK ON HIS 2 FRONT LEGS TO PULL THE WHEELCHAIR CART. (bear in mind, I was told this back in the later part of May 2016 by both the Vet who took Lucky’s measurements and his owner). But the schedule of my Virginia. visit was determined by Lucky’s owner/caretaker who lives in Va. and was involved with taking courses that conflicted with the initial schedule of getting Lucky fitted for his wheel chair in July of 2016,... and then I was informed the date of my rescue mission had to be moved up till August of 2016. So in the time passing from May to Aug. of 2016, Lucky lost almost all of his strength in his front legs as well,.. that I did not discover until my arrival on August 3rd, 2016. This was a heartbreaking wake-up call on Lucky's physical condition.
My cross-country journey began on the road July 30th, 2016 where I would spend a few nights in Champions Gate of Central Florida. (the trip would then be slightly shorter to Chesapeake, Va.). Upon arriving in Chesapeake, Va. on Aug. 3rd, 2016, Lucky met me again after seeing me last from approx. 7 long yrs. ago in dog’s years. (13 months in human time). Afterwards, the challenges became crystal clear. The wheelchair I ordered for Lucky that I transported in my SUV from South Florida while making this Cross-Country Road Trip to Virginia did not work out for Lucky as all had anticipated. Lucky was unable to stand on his front 2 legs to pull the wheelchair cart behind him. The link below shows how it's "supposed" to work.
