The #BluePorterweed (#StachytarphetaJamaicensis), also know as #NearBeer, can be found throughout the #Caribbean and in Florida. It has been planted in many yards and #ButterflyGardens because they’re native, easy to grow, and attract #Pollinators.

Another great benefit to this plant is its variety of useful parts. The leaves are most notably known for making #Tea and their #Brewing potential for a nice flavored #PorterBeer. As I have learned with most tea making, it is important to dry the leaves prior to steeping for tea (or #Beer) making. The flower spike can also be harvested, dried, and later used as a spice much like a bay leaf. Then the flowers, which are my personal favorite, can be eaten raw (and are the only part of the plant that can be consumed raw). The reason I like them is because they have a mild #Umami flavor reminiscent of a raw mushroom. As with eating anything new, especially wild foraged foods, it is alway important to be 100% positive of your identification.

One plant to not get this one confused with is #Vervain (#VerbenaOfficinalis). Happy Foraging!
