The cancellation of the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Sydney undercuts the United States’ “credibility” in the Indo-Pacific region, Perth USAsia Centre CEO Gordon Flake says.

Mr Flake’s comments come after United States President Joe Biden made the decision to postpone his trip to Australia, over negotiations to raising the debt ceiling in the US.

“To be clear, this shouldn’t be seen as a lack of US commitment to the Quad or lack of US commitment to Australia,” Mr Flake told Sky News Australia.

“It really is more an indication of the ongoing weakness and turmoil in US domestic politics.”
