🌱 Why I Cut Plants at Ground Level (and Leave the Roots In) 🌱

When a plant has finished producing, my first instinct isn’t to pull it out.

Instead, I reach for my garden knife or shears and cut it gently at ground level — leaving the roots right where they are.

Here’s why this simple practice is one of the most powerful (and overlooked) ways to care for your soil:

🌿 The roots become soil food
Those roots don’t go to waste. They slowly break down underground, feeding microbes, fungi, and worms — the unseen life that keeps soil healthy and alive.

🌿 Natural soil aeration
As roots decompose, they leave tiny channels in the soil. These pathways improve airflow, water movement, and root access for the next plant you pop in.

🌿 Protects soil structure
Pulling plants out can disturb delicate soil layers and fungal networks. Cutting instead keeps everything intact and calm beneath the surface.

🌿 Supports the soil web
Healthy soil isn’t just dirt — it’s a living ecosystem. Leaving roots honours that relationship and allows nature to do what it does best.

🌿 Less work, more regeneration
This method is gentler on your body and the land. Cut, compost the tops, add a little organic matter, and plant again right into the same spot.

✨ One important exception
If a plant is diseased, absolutely lift it out and dispose of it — we don’t want to spread issues through the garden.

This is slow, regenerative gardening.
Working with the soil instead of against it.
