Ukraine has likely received US permission to use American weapons to strike Russian territory . Le Monde writes about this, analyzing the statements of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his visit to Kiev this week.
The publication drew attention to his words spoken in response to a question from journalists about whether Washington still prohibits Ukraine from firing American weapons at the aggressor’s territory.
"We did not encourage or create the opportunity for strikes outside of Ukraine. But, in the end, Ukraine must decide for itself how it is going to fight or how it will fight a war in defense of its freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity," he said Blinken.
The publication notes that Ukraine was forced to comply with this ban because it is critically dependent on Western assistance. And this became a problem in particular in the case of the new Russian offensive in the Kharkov region. The Ukrainians watched for weeks as the enemy gathered forces near the border, but did not have the opportunity to launch a preemptive strike against the accumulation of enemy forces.
Blinken’s words were spoken after British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, during a visit to Kyiv on May 3, directly stated that he was ready to authorize strikes on Russian territory using weapons provided by London. Le Monde considers the statements by Cameron and Blinken "a sign of a thoughtful change in the West's position" on the issue.
İt should be noted that Ukraine had gotten a small batch of around 20 ATACMS late last year—and had used the two-ton rockets—each scattering hundreds of grenade-sized submunitions—to blow up Russian helicopters and air-defense batteries at airfields near the front line. Recently, Ukrainian army’s ATACMS batteries took aim—targeting MiG-31 interceptors and Sukhoi Su-27 fighters at Belbek air base, just outside Sevastopol in Russian-occupied Crimea, 150 miles south of the front line.
