STORYLINE
Despite the international outrage over an announced Israeli settlement push, Jewish settlers in the West Bank said on Tuesday they support their government's plan to construct thousands of new homes for Jews on war-won land.
Israel continued to defy calls for rescinding its construction plans, announced in retaliation for last week's UN endorsement of a state of Palestine in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, lands Israel captured in 1967.
"There are people who say we shouldn't live here which would make it the only patch of earth which is forbidden to Jews, most of us don't agree. We believe we have the right to live here," said Shai Ben Tekoa, a West Bank settler.
Israel retaliated for the UN recognition of Palestine by announcing plans to build three-thousand homes in the controversial settlements, as well as preparations for construction of an especially sensitive project near Jerusalem, known as E-1.
The E-1 project, in particular, is seen as a threat to any Israeli-Palestinian partition deal.
It would include more than 3,500 homes, cut off east Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank and drive a wedge between the northern and southern West Bank, eroding the possibility of a Palestinian state.
The Israeli reprisal has thrust Israel's strongest Western allies into an unusually harsh showdown with the Jewish state.
"The world begins to criticise. It's hypocritical, it's wrong and we believe we have the right to live here," said Josh Hastan from the Efrat settlement in West Bank.
Meanwhile, the Palestinians say construction in that territory would kill any hope for establishing a viable state of Palestine.
