The 2024 Nissan X-Trail: Space and Comfort in a Family-Friendly Package

Nissan's largest SUV offering, the X-Trail, returns for 2024 with a focus on practicality and comfort. This seven-seater aims to be the ideal family hauler, offering a spacious interior and a smooth ride, albeit with a few compromises.

Under the hood, the X-Trail offers a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine producing 163 horsepower. While adequate for daily driving, it can feel strained when fully loaded or during hard acceleration. Two hybrid e-Power options are available, offering improved efficiency and refinement around town.

The X-Trail's strong suit is its comfortable ride. The suspension soaks up bumps admirably, making it an excellent cruiser for long family road trips. Handling is competent, if not sporty, with light steering that's well-suited to urban environments.

Inside, the X-Trail impresses with its spacious cabin. The first and second rows offer ample room for adults, though the optional third row is best suited for children or short trips. The interior design is modern and functional, with higher trims featuring a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a digital driver's display.

Cargo space is generous, offering 575 liters with the third row folded. However, this falls short of some competitors like the Skoda Kodiaq. The flat load floor and various storage solutions enhance practicality.
Safety features are comprehensive, with standard equipment including emergency braking, lane departure warning, and traffic sign recognition. Higher trims benefit from Nissan's ProPilot system, offering advanced driver assistance features.

Fuel economy is respectable, with the mild hybrid petrol version achieving around 39 mpg in real-world conditions. The full hybrid variants promise even better efficiency, especially for urban driving.

Priced competitively against rivals like the SEAT Tarraco and Peugeot 5008, the X-Trail offers good value, especially considering its generous standard equipment.

While the X-Trail may not be the most exciting SUV on the market, it excels in its primary mission of being a comfortable and practical family vehicle. Its spacious interior, smooth ride, and decent fuel economy make it a solid choice for those prioritizing functionality over sportiness. However, buyers should consider the limited third-row space and somewhat underpowered base engine before making their decision.
