Books in a Time of War: My Day at Hebrew Book Week

This year, Hebrew Book Week in Israel began like every year—with book lovers, writers, and families gathering to celebrate our language, culture, and stories. But this year, it ended almost before it began. The war with Iran changed everything. Air raid sirens replaced literary readings. Security concerns forced the cancellation of events across the country.

But I was lucky. I made it to the first and only day of the fair in Sarona.

For a few hours, I felt peace.

Walking among the bookstalls, I saw something rare: calm, thought, beauty. Families flipping through picture books. Teenagers laughing at sci-fi covers. Elderly readers hugging rare finds. And me—standing still, overwhelmed with joy just from touching a page.

I forgot the fear. I forgot the hatred. In that space, I didn’t feel alone or angry. I felt human.

As someone who has lived through many wars, I can say this honestly: nothing gives me more hope than books. They are quiet, but powerful. Peaceful, but bold. They preserve identity, culture, memory, and imagination.

And in a region where destruction is often louder than creation—books matter more than ever.

Many in the world do not understand us. Some hate us openly. Some have funded terror against us. But a people who gather to read, to write, to publish even during wartime—is a people with a soul.

I bought six books that day. I didn’t choose them for any specific reason. I wanted to carry something home that reminded me who we are. I wanted to hold in my hands proof that we are still alive, still dreaming, still writing.

The terror state that supplied our enemies with weapons has fallen. But we, with our stories, remain. Books will outlive rockets. Ideas will outlast hatred.

I wish the world could see what I saw in Sarona: a nation that still believes in words. A father reading to his daughter. A soldier browsing poetry. A guide like me standing quietly, smiling, surrounded by everything worth protecting.

Yes, the war interrupted our book week. But it cannot erase our voice.
