Mccullough Wilderness Area | Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, Nevada | Visit https://lasvegasareatrails.com/sloan-... | Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area at 48,438 acres is over 4 times the size of Red Rock Park. Located in Southeast of the Las Vegas Strip, it is a vast, well-preserved Mojave Desert area. Expect brown exposed hills with some sunbaked brush: Some Yucca, Creosote Plants, lots of ancient volcanic rock. There is a vast network of hiking and mountain bike trails. Some horse trails.

Today we biked from the McCullough Hills Trailhead off of I-ll and East Horizon Ridge Road in the Henderson, Nevada area about 8 miles to Anthem. McCullough Hills Trail is the main trail with many off-shoot trails (most numbered in the 600 series) creating trail access to the surrounding high points. If you can see a high point, there’s likely a trail that can be hiked or biked to that point. That being said, the trails are rather rocky by bike. I could have traveled faster running!

Upon arrival in Anthem, I decided to take nice asphalt roads back to the McCullough Hills Trailhead, thus making a complete circuit of the McCullough Wilderness area.

The McCullough Hills Trail has a number of high points with spectacular views back down to Henderson and across to the mountains and ridges beyond Lake Mead. At the highest point, over 3,000ft, one can see the Las Vegas Strip and look across to Red Rock Park, the Rainbow Mountains and the Mt. Charleston Wilderness. As you descend into Anthem these views become more and more spectacular.
