Fibular osteotomy is a surgical procedure in which part of the fibula (the smaller bone of the lower leg) is cut and repositioned or removed. It is usually performed to correct deformities, relieve joint pressure, or assist in reconstructive procedures.

Definition: Cutting the fibula bone to realign, shorten, or remove a segment.

⚕️ Indications
Knee osteoarthritis (medial compartment):

Fibular osteotomy can reduce load on the medial knee joint by altering force distribution.

Ankle deformities:

Used in reconstructive surgery for valgus/varus deformities.

Bone grafting:

Fibula segments may be harvested for grafts in jaw or long bone reconstruction.

Tumor resection or trauma:

Osteotomy may be part of surgical management.

Proximal fibular osteotomy (PFO):

Commonly used for medial compartment knee osteoarthritis.

Involves removing a small segment of the fibula near the knee.

Reduces stress on the medial tibiofemoral joint, improving pain and function.

Segmental osteotomy:

Cutting and removing a section of fibula for grafting or deformity correction.

Realignment osteotomy:

Adjusting fibula position to correct ankle/knee alignment.
