There’s a kind of New York Yankee standing in George Washington’s house now.

Uniform crisp.
Pockets bottomless.
And a generosity that’s become an operating system.

The wealthiest Americans now fund what the government used to.
Ballrooms rise. Inaugurations shatter records.
All paid for by private check.

We’re told it’s patriotism.
We’re told it’s efficiency.

But generosity born of tax advantage is not charity.
It’s leverage.

When billionaires underwrite the republic,
the republic owes them something back.

Better, perhaps, to trust their generosity less
and simply have everyone pay their fair share of taxes.

It’s how the house was built the first time.

As Mark Twain put it:
“Patriotism is supporting your country all the time,
and your government when it deserves it.”
