Jurema is a typical religious expression of northeastern Brazil. It is both a rural and urban religion, but scholars have only recently become interested in the urban Jurema that involves the confluence of other religious expressions such as umbanda, Catholicism, candomblé and voodoo from Maranhão.

Mimosa tenuiflora, syn. Mimosa hostilis, also known as jurema preta, calumbi (Brazil), tepezcohuite (México), carbonal, cabrera, jurema, black jurema, and binho de jurema, is a perennial tree or shrub native to the northeastern region of Brazil (Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia) and found spreading as far north as Southern Mexico (Oaxaca and coast of Chiapas), and in smaller less effective amounts in the following countries: El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Colombia and Venezuela. It is most often found in lower altitudes, but it can be found as high as 1,000 m (3,300 ft).

The highest concentration and most probable origin is located in Northeast of Brazil where the active psychoactive ingredient DMT DimethylTryptamine is on average the highest for inner root bark ( membrane ) containing anywhere from 0.5% to 2.4% ( depending on location, plant itself,nature, climate conditions, how when it was harvested, etc... ) . It contains this psychoactive ingredient to protect itself against harsh stressful conditions such as long droughts followed by long hard periods of heavy tropical rain, parasites, insects, rodents, etc...
