If you're looking to add more space onto your van, whether you're gonna be putting on a bike rack, or a cargo carrier, or towing a trailer, adding a trailer hitch receiver is gonna be a great option. And today on our 2023 Toyota Sienna, we're gonna be taking a look at installing the TowSmart trailer hitch receiver. My name's Brad, and we're gonna take a closer look, and then I'm gonna show you how to get this installed on your Sienna. Now this is what the hitch is gonna look like when it's installed on your Sienna, and, I guess, a slight drawback would be the fact that it's gonna be an exposed cross tube. That's kind of the nature of all the hitches available For the Sienna. I personally drive a Sienna.

Mine looks just like this, but the functionality is totally there. Because this is a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening, all the accessories that you'd be loading into your hitch are gonna be a pretty standard size. So that means you have tons of options when it comes to bike racks, cargo carriers, and even ball mounts for towing. All of those are gonna stay in place where a 5/8 pin and clip. Now this is not included with the hitch.

But a lot of times when you pick up accessories, they'll have them included. And if you plan on leaving your accessory on long term, maybe a bike rack for the whole season, you might wanna look at a locking pin and clip. It becomes a good deterrent from anyone just walking by. They won't be able to just take out that pin and clip and the accessories with them. Now if you plan on pulling a trailer, you're gonna be hooking up safety chains, and this is a plate style safety chain loop.

So you can hook up a standard S-hook, even a larger clevis style will go on here with no issue. Now when it comes to towing or really using any accessory, you're gonna want to adhere to the weight capacities, not only of the hitch, but also what the vehicle is rated at. So first step, check your vehicle's owner's manual and see what the vehicle's rated to tow. And then you can compare that with the hitch. You're gonna wanna take the lower number.

So even though the hitch may be rated higher, that doesn't mean that you can safely pull it with your vehicle. And this one actually has some pretty good ratings. It has a gross trailer weight rating of 3,500 pounds, which is gonna be the weight of the trailer, plus the accessories loaded onto it. As far as tongue weight, that's gonna be the downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube opening. It really comes into play for your suspended accessories. So cargo carriers and bike racks. And this one's pretty good at 350 pounds. Now, if you're wanting to extract a little bit more, you can get a weight distribution hitch, which will actually bump the numbers up, and that's gonna give you 5,000 pounds for a gross trailer weight rating and 500 for your tongue weight. So what does that mean for you Well, I have the same ratings on my van and I've used a small trailer to haul furniture, drywall, kayaks, a bunch of things. So really, it's a nice addition, you know, on vacation to be able to put your stuff in a cargo carrier, really just gives you a lot more space inside. Some accessories can stow in a vertical position, saving you a lot of length on your vehicle. And some of those are gonna be bike racks and cargo carriers, but you wanna make sure that it's gonna be able to work with your van and not make contact with a fascia. So from the center of our hitch pin hole to the furthest point of our fascia, it's right at about four inches. I don't worry too much that you're gonna have any issues as far as clearance. But keep in mind, when they're stowed in the vertical position, more than likely your license plate and your backup cameras are gonna be blocked as well as the hatch will not be able to open until you drop those accessories down. Minor things in the grand scheme, but just something to keep in mind. Something else that's gonna be important is our ground clearance. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground, we're coming in at 11 inches, and it's not ground clearance of, you know, worrying about the hitch hitting. More or less, that's gonna be a good measurement for determining accessories. You might wanna look at something with a raised shank. That way you get more ground clearance when goin
