I got to cook in a professional kitchen for the first time in Greece and it was an amazing experience! Admittedly though, I was by myself - but having nearly every tool and appliance at your disposal is a liberating experience to say the least!

Greece is a fascinating place. Right off the bat, I'm gonna say that it's been one of my favourite places to visit.

FOOD:
The food is simple and relies on the quality of ingredients, similar to the way it is in Italy, but with more emphasis on hearty, earthy flavours that hit something primal. The gyros, my goodness, they were something else, fatty juice meat slices with oregano doused fries and holy moly, just writing this my mouth is watering!

HISTORY
Greek history is fascinating - especially if you can get yoursefl a good tour guide. Alki is a wealth of information. She's an entire textbook on Grecian history, and we got the full blow by blow walking tour. It was amazing - the Acropolis is probably the best historical artefacts I've seen. Pro-tip: go in the afternoon (in summer) and watch the sunset from the steps of the Acropolis.

BEACHES
The beaches are beautiful. Now, I've not been to any of the Greek Islands, but beaches along the mainland are beautiful in their own right, and from what I've seen, a lot quieter. I still don't think paying for a lounger is cool though. No commerce on the beach please!!

The "AIR B'nB"
I did not pay for this, (I wouldn't be able to) but it is rented out. It's Alki's family summer house and it is truly stunning. It blends into the hillside, and goes into the ground. From the road, you'd barely notice it was there. On the grounds, they make olive oil in limited batches, and fresh red wine, which is delicious and goes down very smooth.

GREECE AFTER ECONOMIC WOES
I feel like its fairly easy to put two and two together. Driving through the Greece countryside to the coast, we got to see some of the bigger impacts of the Greek economy faltering - mainly with abandoned buildings, things left to fall into disrepair. And the the town where we saw it properly was Amaliada - it seemed like every second house was abandoned in the area we were in. Of course, It was thriving elsewhere, but the effects were definitely apparent. I can only hope to see a full recovery, with the Greek economy hitting its stride once more.

MY COOKING
I think I could have done with creating something with a bit more refined, especially given the tools at my disposal. But the flavours were broadly there - they just weren't as dynamic as I'd hoped. I think more of an acid touch would have been what it needed- something to cut through the umami fatty flavours a bit better.

I think mainland Greece is a place to visit if you're interesting in seeing the side of Greece that isn't all hyper-polished experiences and tourists. You'll see the good and the bad, but will ultimately come down to your willingness to ignore the manicured version of things and see and appreciate Greece for greek people, culture, history and food - with all the highs and lows that come with it. After all, this travel vlog is not a holiday, its an experience!
