Nepal police fired rubber bullets and tear gas on February 20, 2022, as hundreds protested against a $500 million US aid grant. The money is being provided by the US Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) under an agreement the organisation signed with the Nepali government in 2017. The grant will be used to build a power line to carry electricity to the Indian border and for road improvement. But Nepal’s pro-Beijing politicians said accepting the funds could undermine Nepali sovereignty. The issue has divided the ruling coalition headed by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba of the Nepali Congress party. China has sent a message saying it will not sit idly if the development activities in Nepal undermine its interests, according to Nepal’s former ambassador in Beijing Mahendra Bahadur Pandey.
