►Fuel has to pass through several different places before reaching your injectors or carburetors. It's not uncommon for it to pick up contaminants along the way, so it's the fuel filter's job to ensure those never reach the engine. Replacing the fuel filter is the only way to keep the fuel clean and flowing freely, as failing to do so will let the filter clog. Porsche specifies a replacement every 25,000 miles or two years, whichever comes first.

Replacing the fuel filter is a fairly straightforward job. There'll likely be some fuel spray unless you pull the pump relay and run the car until the lines are emptied, so grab some rags along with the couple of wrenches you'll need. Either way, there are two fittings to undo, and the pump comes out.

Follow along with FCP Euro's Professional DIYer, Mike Hidalgo, as he replaces the fuel filter in a vintage air-cooled Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera.
