The importance of air temp regarding timing!
Some items of note regarding dyno tuning. Keep in mind that the air-flow and the cooling of the engine while a car is on the dyno is not as efficient as it would be when driving outside. I prefer to tune a car in the morning or in the evening since the air is cooler going into the engine. I also like to keep the engine cool before I start the dyno tune. The hotter the air going into the engine is the more your timing will have to e retarded to prevent detonation. It is good to tune an engine to be accepting of hot air, but the best tune should be where the intake air temperature is closest to your driving air temperature. Put some frozen water bottles in your airbox or in front of your air filter. Or pour water over your intercooler occasionally to keep intake air temp down. The reason why...if your air is too hot on the tune, then your horsepower readings will be inaccurate on the dyno and your actual driving will have an incorrect tune since the engine was dyno'd with hot air. This will also throw off the wideband o2 sensor reading since the sensor is most accurate at a certain exhaust temperature. Some people install exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors near the wideband (approximately 3 feet down) to receive the most accurate wideband reading. The more the timing is advanced, or the hotter the intake air, the hotter the exhaust will be since exhaust is hotter closest to detonation even if there is no detonation.
