With dry and hot conditions expected to persist in the Western Cape in the coming months, Provincial authorities are hopeful that during his State of the Nation Address, President Cyril Ramaphosa will make an announcement on their call for a Disaster Declaration to be issued for the province to fight the fires. Wild fires that have occurred since October have wreaked havoc, destroying thousands of hectares of vegetation and a number of properties. And the Western Cape Disaster Management Centre said it had already exceeded its budget of 15-million-rand to fight fires by January,
which was only the mid-point of the annual fire season in the province.
