The Breakthrough Victoria Challenge aims to spark and generate solutions from the broader scientific and innovation community on emerging issues around the world. This year's Breakthrough Victoria Challenge will focus attention on reducing solar PV waste across landfills.

We had the pleasure of having The Hon. Lily D’Ambrosio, Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Action and Solar Homes, announcing the inaugural theme to our Challenge at the launch event on 30 September 2022. Hosted by Deakin University, Waurn Ponds campus, the launch event also saw a panel of industry experts speak about solar panel recycling and the challenges of solar waste management.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reported in 2016 stated Australia is projected to generate 145,000 tonnes a year of PV solar waste by 2030, with the United States expecting 1m tonnes a year and China 1.5m tonnes.

While solar panels are design to last tough conditions, it also makes separating and reusing its components more complicated. Breakthrough Victoria will invest up to $10 million to tackle solar panel waste and develop scalable innovative technologies within Victoria as part of this new Challenge program.
