In a stark and uncomfortable visual dialogue between a performer and his audience, director Samuel Smelty invites viewers into a space of unresolved tension for the experimental short film Field of Tension. Captured as a two-channel film installation, the piece explores the silent negotiations and search for validation that reinforces the dynamic, placing the viewer between authenticity and approval, the stage and the crowd below.

Working in close collaboration with German actor Leonard Kunz, and cinematographer Moritz Matlik, Smelty amplifies the discomfort at the film’s core, constructing Field of Tension around emotional performance, and restrained visual language.
