From this day forward, when talking about, writing about, or making documentaries about the “history” of Australian Hip Hop, can we all please differentiate the history of ‘commercial’ Australian hip hop with the actual ‘history’ of Australian Hip Hop. Hip Hop music was doing great in this country way before Triple J and the ARIAS tried to leech on and have a piece of it and define and shape what it was due to their personal tastes. There was even the ARIA ‘Urban’ award before the ‘Hip Hop’ award because they didn’t really know what it was. Not to take anything away from those who achieved commercial success because I feel immensely proud of all your achievements, but when I keep hearing about the ‘history’ of Hip Hop in Australia and names don’t get mentioned such as AKA Brothers, Lazy Grey, Prowla, Brad Strut, Trem and many other actual game changers who paved the way and created a platform for others to rise from, i’m not hearing the real history. Instead it’s disrespecting the ones who made it possible and opened doors for artists today to have any kind of so called mainstream, commercial success. Never forget that.
Real recognise real.
