In rare mid-session speakership election, Greg Fergus is chosen as the new Speaker of the House of Commons. The Liberal MP, who was elected in the riding of Hull-Aylmer in 2015, will be Canada's first Black House Speaker. The election comes following the resignation of Anthony Rota, who stepped down after inadvertently honouring a Ukrainian who fought for a Nazi unit in the Second World War. The tribute took place during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's September 22 visit to Parliament.
