One of the most common execution methods used throughout History was hanging, or the gallows. This was a structure in which a rope and noose were secured around so that a condemned criminal could be suspended by their neck and the rope. This method had a number of different variations such as the short drop, or the long drop and they were known to go wrong a number of times. Expert executioners such as Albert Pierrepoint became known for their skill at hangings, but during the Second World War John C Woods who hanged the Nuremberg Defendants became infamous for his botching.

But the gallows was a feared and brutal execution structure and was used in part of the feared hanging, drawing and quartering process. But was it one of history's most horrific methods?
